BELGIUM: EURO 2020 TOURNAMENT REVIEW

Belgium went into the Euro 2020 tournament as the number one ranked team in the world and were seen as one of the favourites to win the tournament.

The Red Devils were drawn in Group B at the tournament alongside Russia, Denmark and Finland who were making an appearance at the tournament for the first time. Belgium started the tournament with a comprehensive victory over hosts Russia. New Chelsea striker RomeluLukaku scored a brace in addition to the strike from substitute Thomas Meunier to propel Belgium to a 3-0 win over the Russians.Thomas Vermaelen started the Russia game on the bench before coming on as a substitute for fellow defender Jan Vertoghen in the second half.

Belgium came from a goal down to beat hosts Denmark 2-1 thanks to the second half strikes from Thorgan Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne. The Danes took the lead in the first half through YussufPoulsen. Denmark took the lead as early as the second minute but they could not hold on to the advantage in the second half.Thomas Vermaelen made his second appearance of the tournament as an added time substitute for Borussia Dortmund attacker Thorgan Hazard.

Thomas Vermaelen made three more appearances for Belgium before they were knocked out in the quarterfinals thanks to eventual champions Italy. He started all those three games starting with the 2-0 win over Finland in the final Group B game for the Belgians.

Belgium finished their group stage campaign with the maximum points available and their reward was a round of 16 clash with Portugal who were the defending champions at the tournament. In the end, Belgium won the game 1-0 to progress into the next round thanks to the goal from Thorgan Hazard in the first half.

Italy eliminated Belgium in the quarterfinals via a 2-1 win.
